A number of people in York have got together who are interested in a unique ambition, to build a faithful replica Viking Longship or 'Drakkar' as the Vikings new them. The aim is to use the Longship for many purposes including, competing, money raising for good causes, corporate events, entertainment and not least for education

Jorvik Afloat
is the name of the group that has set itself this challenge.

To help with publicity and fund raising Jorvik Afloat has borrowed a modern plastic reproduction Longship from a group of people known as:
Regia Angalorum. They have given us use of the boat provided we restore it's fabric to a water tight state by making necessary repairs and obtaining a Surveyors' Report. This is the state of the Longship before we started work on it.

First the Magnet Cup, then came the Ebor.

For all those interested, we had intended to hold a Viking boat challenge on the Ouse for the Viking Festival in February, however logistics and the chance that the river will be un navigable due to flooding. has led us to postpone this event until the festival of rivers later in the year. We apologise to all those who were looking forward to this event

Jorvik Afloat aims to build a faithful replica Viking Longship that will be as good as any that currently exists in Europe. The Longship will not only be the show piece of the annual York Viking Festival but at many similar Viking festivals held around the UK So the opportunities for a significant Sponsor are enormous. We see the Longship as an impressive resource for use by individuals, groups, education bodies or companies who want to use it to fire people's imagination and interest in traditional and modern heritage.

To do this we need to raise money. There is no public money available for a project of this nature. So we need to obtain sponsorship funding from local or national organisations in exchange for which they will be able to promote their name and their products or services.

We can only achieve our goal with help from our friends and supporters

We know that in order to achieve all our objectives we need to raise a substantial sum of money or have physical/material support provided. Approximately 100,000 is needed to start construction of the Longship, which should take between six and nine months and we estimate a further 100,000 to support the boat, including a trailer and all the ancillary equipment through the ships first few years of events.
