They have a strong Viking tradition and they have re-created a Dark Age
village called Danelaw Village.
The site is open to the public daily and various groups and
individuals visit throughout the year, many hundreds of school
children come on a daily basis and many people volunteer to help
maintain and develop the site as well as providing an in-depth
knowledge of the numerous facets of Viking traditions and way of
life. Children are able to dress up and experience for themselves
what it must have been like to live over 1000 years ago.
Having access to the building of a boat will be a privilege for most people but
an even rarer privilege to witness an actual Viking Longship being constructed.
Whilst the Longship is being built we have
agreements from local TV, Radio and York Evening Press that they
will follow the build progress and provide media coverage throughout
the various stages.
When the Longship is ready to take to the water it will be a major and
significant event. Full media coverage has been agreed and those who have helped
fund the project will have a major impact on how this is stage managed.
